It is a decapod crustacean that lives in sand and mud bottoms. It lives at depths between 500 and 2000m. It belongs to the Palaemonidae family. It is a good swimmer that performs important migrations. The basis of its diet is composed of organic debris, plankton and algae.

It has a strong flavor, compared to similar species such as shrimps and prawns. Its head is very tasty and is excellent in the preparation of sauces, soups and creams. Sometimes it can be confused with the Moorish shrimp, which is of similar quality.
