Description
Japanese black pepper, known as “koshō” or “sanshō,” is a variety of pepper used in Japanese cuisine. Despite its name, it is not a traditional pepper in the sense of the common black pepper we know. Japanese black pepper comes from the Zanthoxylum piperitum plant, which is a species of shrub that belongs to the citrus family. Unlike conventional black pepper, sanshō seeds have a citrusy, spicy and slightly pungent flavor rather than being simply hot.
